Indie Gaming in China

indiech

Indie games are getting more and more recognition in the U.S. and Europe, so what's the scene like in China?

There are quite a few fans of indie games in China. Of course, the scene is not as big as its U.S. or European counterpart, but it's there nonetheless (and hopefully growing). China is known for piracy, and where there's indie games, free downloads of (paid) indie games aren't far behind. We won't talk about these things here.

Anyways, to start things off, some Chinese websites on indie games. There used to be quite a few, but unfortunately some of them disappeared or is quite inactive.

Still Alive Edition: IGF Finalists, TM News, and More

Indeed, mG is still alive! It's just that real life is getting busier and busier =(

So many things to talk about, where to start? First of all, finalists for this year's IGF is out for a while. As (somewhat) expected, games like Blueberry Garden, Dyson and Night Game made it in, while some other unexpected entries, like You Have To Burn The Rope, also somehow ended up in there, lol. Congratulations to Cortex Command for finally making it in, and Machinarium is looking mightily good.

In other IGF news, the 2009 IGF Student Showcase winners are out, and voting for the Audience Award is currently underway.

Cave Story on Wii, World of Goo Release Date, The Underside Preview, Blah Blah

So, apparently a lot of things can happen in just a few weeks, which, not surprisingly, makes this place look old and out-dated...but that's besides the point.

So, Where to start? First and foremost, the biggest news this week: Cave Story, the Holy Grail of the Indie Games Movement and apparently the most ripped-off game in indie history, is coming to the Nintendo Wii. So either indie fans will see this move as a betrayal on Cave Story's part of moving towards commercialism, or simply a way to bring in more fans, I hope for the latter, though. More info on the Wii version here.

While on the subject, a new preview for The Underside, former Cave Story ripoff and now almost-a-game-of-its-own, can be spotted in the wild.

What's this? A release date for World of Goo!?!? Something must be wrong! (Those who pre-ordered will get the game a week earlier, muahahaha!)

And that's about it!
