Braid
Braid is a puzzle platformer made by Jonathan Blow. Development for Braid began in 2005, and the game was released for Xbox Live Arcade in mid-2008, and PC and PlayStation 3's PlayStation Network in 2009. Braid won the Innovation in Game Design award at the 2006 IGF.
In 2008, Braid, with its painterly graphics and innovative gameplay mechanics, received many positive reviews from game critics and the press after its release on XBLA, and became one of the most commercially successful indie games of the year.
Introducing Braid
In Braid, the player controls Tim, a man who is on a quest to rescue his "princess." As the player beat each level, a little piece of the story is revealed. Braid's story is one of the game's shining points, and will gamers think, think hard, very hard.
Braid's gameplay is very simple. The player can jump and move around. Some enemies can be defeated by simply jumping on top of them, while others require more sophisticated methods. What separate Braid from most other platformer is Tim's ability to manipulate time. Tim can rewind and fast-forward time, and by doing so, he can undo anything that happens in the game, including his own death.
The goal of each level is to collect puzzle pieces by solving some kind of puzzle using Tim's time-manipulation abilities. As the player progresses through different levels, Tim receives different time-related powers, such as slowing down time or creating "shadow" versions of himself. The unique and clever puzzles in Braid was one of the reasons the game was so well-received by both the press and the fans.
